Former Acting CIA Director Mike Morell made the following observation in an interview withh Politico the other day:
“When Hugo Chavez first got elected there was no political opposition. It had faded away. There was no opposition leader to stand up and paint a different future for Venezuela, one that challenged Chavez’s future. And, as a result of there being no political opposition, the Venezuelan media became the political opposition. And in becoming the political opposition, it lost all of its credibility with the Venezuelan people. Sound familiar? So, I think that as important as the media’s role is here—and it’s probably more important today than it ever has been, given where we are—the media has to absolutely make certain that they are playing this straight. Right? And that they aren’t taking sides in any way.”
And there-in lies the danger. With a leaderless Democrat Party (unless one considers Hillary, Nancy and Chuck to be leaders) that has been effectively neutered, the American media establishment has taken up the banner of the political opposition to Donald Trump. In doing so it has lost all credibility. No one could seriously assert that the media is unbiased. In its opposition to Trump the media has, in fact, become unhinged.
It doesn’t really matter whether you love Trump or loathe him, whether you think he’s the greatest president ever or a dangerous lunatic. What matters is that the truth be served. The Washington Post famously and ironically adopted the slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness” after the election of Donald Trump. Indeed it does and it is precisely the Post, the New York Times, NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN which are casting the shroud of darkness over our political system by leading the resistance against Trump.
The whole Mueller investigation is troubling enough. Its mission is clear: Find a reason, any reason, to nullify the 2016 election and remove Trump from office. It is being aided and abetted by a media determined to do the same.
The greatest threat to America today comes not from Russia or Chine or ISIS. Nothing that any of them do can reverse the results of an election. Only we can allow that to happen, and if we do, democracy dies.
There are four kinds of truth. There is the truth as seen through the eyes of a perpetrator. There is the truth as seen through the eyes of the victim. There is the truth as seen through the eyes of the witness. There is the ultimate truth that is hidden away in a cloud of deception and vengeance.
The role of the Fourth Estate is to wipe away that cloud to expose the ultimate truth. When it only focuses on one of the other truths, the media itself engages in increasing the darkness. Lies become truth and truth becomes lies. Combined with the absence of evidence to support or disqualify any version of the truth, disarray and chaos ensue.
We are marching headstrong towards that moment when truth no longer has a meaning. Should the forces arrayed against trump succeed in accomplishing what they are determined to accomplish, faith in our systems and institutions will dissolve. Those who abhor Trump and view his very existence with contempt would better serve the future interests of the nation by accepting the present reality and preparing for their own victory on the political battlefield. But, alas, they are hell bent on bringing him down, the costs to the nation be damned.
We have met the enemy and he is us.
